Eptifibatide is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide antiplatelet agent, derived from the disintegrin peptide of southeastern pygmy rattlesnake venom. It acts as a reversible, selective glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GP IIb/IIIa) receptor antagonist on human platelets.
It blocks the final common pathway of platelet aggregation: it prevents fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor and other adhesive ligands from binding to GP IIb/IIIa receptors, thus inhibiting platelet cross-linking and thrombus formation. The antiplatelet effect is reversible; platelet function recovers rapidly after stopping infusion.
Clinically, it is administered intravenously for:
It is commonly used in combination with aspirin and heparin.
